rapa nui
Nothing fresh to offer, just some photos from before I knew anything about taking photos. I visited a tiny remote volcanic island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with some friends during my studies in Chile. Upon request, I brought horse medicine from the mainland for a local. He lived by himself on the opposite side of the island, so Mikey & I borrowed bikes and rode through a lava...

farewell leggy blonde
I’m downsizing my holdings due to an impending move, and today I sold my ‘74 Schwinn tandem. Many memories on this fly lady, such nice lines…a sad day indeed.

drifts
After getting bombarded by podlets of sleet on a strangely hued day, I am reminded of how special winter is…especially a late winter while we are saving our daylight. I finally got my film back (and some severe sticker shock…$28 for 36 exposures!…definitely time to find a darkroom.).
sad lunch
Not much to share in the wake of my sputtering virality (I made that word up)…except what I feasted on for lunch the other day. Waiting on a few rolls of film from the lab, but just found out my local lab will no longer be developing black and white film any longer, as of April Fools Day. In fact, the only commercial black&white labs left are in SF & LA. Anyone have a darkroom I...

tsunami surge
An a-frame rolls through amid the tsunami surge at an extremely crowded rivermouth. Ghetto birds hovering, waves firing, harbor destruction ensuing. Turned out to be a pretty exciting Friday. Here’s a video I shot around 11:30am in the upper harbor. The lady standing next to me was extremely annoying at the time, but upon further review she has some pretty classic quotes. YouTube viewers...

colombia part v - fin
Well, that is all for Colombia, except one last image. I don’t normally like the look of HDR images, but somehow the metallic surrealism of this photo tickled my fancy.
colombia part iv - spicy carrots: swimsuit edition
The last week of our trip was spent in our paradise found, where el Río Piedra meets the Caribbean Sea. Descending upon the golden hour, a photo shoot ensued. I couldn’t be left out of the hotness. Next photo by Kayla. This was painful. Here is our crib and our new friends.

colombia part ii - zona cafetera
Dropping down a few thousand feet to the fertile volcanic soils prime for coffee production, we reach the Zona Cafetera. Colombia, along with most coffee producing nations, exports nearly 100% of its best beans. Nearly all the coffee available within the country is instant coffee, save a few Starbucks-esque chains which serve a decent but nothing special cup of drip. Frustrated with the coffee...

colombia part i - bogotá
We spent a few days wandering around Bogotá, gathering our bearings, getting my Spanish going again, etc… It’s an interesting city, nestled at 8,600 feet and hugging some high Andean peaks. The socioeconomic structure runs north to south, the riches to the slums, respectively. Unconglomerated sprawl heads westward. Somewhere in the middle of that sits the historical neighborhood,...
truth
Getting back into the swing of things here. Plenty of photos from Colombia to come, but in the meantime, this song by Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is as addictive as those little chocolate chip cookies from Trader Joes. (This video isn’t official, by the way, but has some cool footage and photos of Jack Johnson) On another note, if you didn’t notice, I...

mambo colombiano
The above image is of a 18,000+ ft. peak (the name has escaped me) near La Paz, Bolivia, taken during the last time I was in South America…6 years ago. Tomorrow, Kayla and I are off again to the high Andes of Colombia for two weeks and a much needed vacation. See you after the Super Bowl!

to the south
As a large SW swell rapidly began to build, we all broke our boards in the same session. So we packed up and headed south (well, technically east) to the rural Oaxacan point breaks that offered some opportunities to explore with the Jeep. We found points, waves, great people, spicy carrots, and LOTS of wind.

canines of the calle
Some street/beach dogs encountered in Mexico. For the most part they were in surprisingly good shape as compared to what I had been used to seeing in Central America. They were picky about their food scraps, and some even wore harnesses.
el otoño
Fall has been good to us this year with some balmy weather, olas sabrosas, and some damn good times. Still feeling restless. The travel tick is swollen. Reprieved with unpublished photos of a late summer trip to mainland mexico, to which you are now privy. Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, looks kind of like this:
